Welcome to ZygomycOnline!

Early 2002 came with the formation of the ongoing Fungal Genome Initiative (FGI). Its aim is to sequence a broad range of fungal genomes for use within the scientific community.

One of the fungal groups encompassed by the FGI are the 'Zygomycota'. Only one species within this phylum (Rhizopus oryzae) has currently been proposed as a definite for sequencing.

  • This site has been designed with the intention of highlighting the opportunities that the sequenced genome of R.oryzae will offer to scientific and industrial communities.
  • Another aim of this website is to draw attention to the hypothetical possibilities that would be opened by a better representation of the Zygomycete fungi in the FGI.

Above. R.Oryzae. The only zygomycete proposed for sequencing by the FGI and the inspiration behind this website.

  • ZygomycOnline is a resource designed mainly for people with a reasonably good biological knowledge and as such, the vocabulary is tailored to this audience. Where necessary, specialist definitions have been included. For those with only limited biological knowledge the key concepts have been highlighted in this purple colour throughout the site. For information on navigation see below.
  • ******Please take a minute to fill in the questionnaire once you have visited the site. The link is in the navigation bar on the left.******

UPDATE!!!

During the construction of ZygomycOnline, the sequencing of the R.oryzae genome has been completed! For more information and access to the sequence go here.

Navigating ZygomycOnline

ZygomycOnline has been designed in two navigation modes.

  • It reads coherently from start to finish if you desire to learn all about genomics and the FGI in relation to the Zygomycota. To follow the site in this way, simply use the navigation buttons at the bottom of the page. They look like this:
  • If you wish to delve into a certain category of zygomycete genomic technology, then use the primary navigation bar to select the area of interest (eg Agriculture or Phylogeny), followed by the desired sub category in the secondary navigation bar on the left.
  • References have been numbered in superscript. For the list of references, simply click the 'references' link at the top or bottom of each page.

Enjoy your visit to ZygomycOnline- I hope it proves to be a useful resource to you!
